Chapter History

Our Founding Members

On July 10, 1907, twenty-one women met at 314 Chesnut Street in Camden, South Carolina, the home of Mrs. Mary Ancrum Shannon, for the purpose of organizing the Hobkirk Hill Chapter, NSDAR. Mrs. Shannon was unanimously elected as the chapter's first regent. Meeting notes state that "The regent read letters of greeting from the Rebecca Motte Chapter, NSDAR, of Charleston and the Kings Mountain Chapter, NSDAR, of "Yorkville" (York, South Carolina), and also extracts from the Constitution and By-Laws of the Rebecca Motte Chapter, NSDAR, as it would assist us in forming those of our chapter." The regent reported that she had received notice of approval of twenty-one applicant papers.
